Your winter guide to the best bedding accessories

ADD A PROTECTOR
Buying a mattress is a huge investment. So it pays to care for it as well. An inexpensive way of doing that is with a mattress protector. Slipping over the mattress like a fitted sheet, a mattress protector acts as a barrier to capture allergens, dust and perspiration. Some are waterproof, and most of them are anti-bacterial which will increase your protection against mould and bacteria. And because nearly all of them are machine washable, you can refresh them as often as you need. Easy!
DROP ON A TOPPER
Not to be confused with a mattress protector, a mattress topper is all about comfort. By adding an extra layer of luxurious padding, a mattress topper can prolong the life of a new mattress and revitalise an old one. Mattress toppers tend to come with a variety of different fills (ball fibre, memory fibre and memory foam), thickness, weights, and softness. But ultimately, the best kind of topper is the one that offers you the most comfort.
MEET THE SHEETS
It's time to finally start adding the bedding components you can see and touch, starting with the sheets. Fitted sheets fit snugly over your mattress (and mattress protector or topper if you have them) and stay in place thanks to their elasticated edges. Flat sheets (or top sheets) lie on top of the fitted sheet and have a decorative edge that sits at the head of the bed. And last come the pillowcases, made to protect your pillows from wear and tear.
The general rule of thumb is to have three sets of sheets: one on the bed, one in the linen cupboard and one in the laundry. That way, you'll always have fresh sheets on hand and extend the life of your sheets.
DOUBLE DOWN ON COMFORT
Now it's time to talk quilts. Designed to provide warmth and comfort while sleeping, quilts come in many different materials and weights. Given it's winter, let's take a deeper dive into what makes each of them so snuggly.
Wool quilts have come a long way since nan's old woolen blankets! This durable, natural fibre offers benefits such as moisture-wicking breathability, temperature regulating adaptability and non-allergic qualities. Even better many modern wool quilts are now machine washable as well. A heavier wool quilt can provide a supreme night's sleep for those that love a comforting weight in winter.
There's a reason feather and down quilts have proved popular for hundreds of years. Thanks to a process called lofting, super soft duck and goose down traps tiny pocks of air within their filaments to create insulation, whilst the bigger stiffer feathers provide the bulk, support and structure. A feather and down quilt is a wonderfully luxurious way to get warm without the weight, and slumber through whatever weather winter throws your way.
Polyester perfection - being the most versatile kind of quilt, polyester quilts are an affordable, easy-care alternative for the whole family. The alternative to down quilts are another variation of polyester, which emulates the properties of feather and down, making it the perfect options for people who have allergies.
