A good pillow is essential to good sleep and should keep the neck and spine in alignment during the night. The size of a person and their sleeping style will also influence the type of pillow required.
The following needs to be considered when selecting your pillow:
Mattress
When choosing a pillow, a general rule of thumb is to match your pillow to your mattress. ie if your mattress is sprung to a soft tension, you should consider a soft pillow. If possible keep the fillings of your quilt and pillows consistent so your sleep is as refreshing and revitalizing as possible.
How you sleep
It is possible to choose a pillow by your sleeping position or the level of support that you prefer.
Back and neck pains can be caused by a pillow that has lost its shape or has the wrong fillings for your requirements. Simply by replacing a soft pillow with a firmer one that moulds to your shape can create better support for your neck and shoulders.
On Your Side
A firm pillow will provide the best support for your head and neck and will help to keep your spine straight.
On Your Tummy Or On Your Back
A softer pillow as your head is much nearer to the mattress and therefore requires less support.
The Filling
Different fillings will give different levels of support.
Feather and Down
Will mould to your head and neck to give you gentle support.
Man made filling (ie Polyester)
Will generally give firmer support but can come in 3 comfort levels of Firm, Medium or Soft. Cost effective and cheaper to replace.
